Pretty girls make me stutter.
"Disability activists abandon their wheelchairs and mobility devices and crawl up the 83 stone steps of the U.S. Capital Building demanding the passage of the American with Disability Act, March 12, 1990."
I feel like there is a trend where photos of monumental moments in civil and human rights are presented in black and white, which really distracts from the reality that this happened less than 25 years ago.
This is a fucking badass demonstration and to present fighting ableism as something that happened a long long time ago is really just not reality.
Yeah, I think that it presents this in a sort of “we’ve come so far since then” kind of light, when that’s just not true. For example, in 2009 ADAPT protested the lack of long-term care services in the health care reform legislation with a very similar protest/sit-in:
Let me tell you a fucking thing about costume design. That’s some in depth, difficult shit to learn. And the fact that this goddess can ramble this shit off the cuff means she knows her shit. ELLE WOODS IS A GODAMNED GENIUS AND IT’s NOT A STRETCH TO BELIEVE SHE GOT INTO HARVARD LAW MMMK?
FUCK YEAH ELLE WOODS OR DIE
this movie is literally about an attractive woman who loves to party having to prove over and over again that she’s also intelligent and hard-working to those who judge her based on her looks (who also empowers and fights for other women, and fosters unlikely friendships instead of engaging in girl hate) and if you don’t think that’s some great feminist shit then I don’t know what your problem is
Let’s not forget that in the end when the guy wants her again, she turns him down because she knows she deserves better.
AND let’s not forget that at the end she is the class-elected speaker at the graduation ceremony, has graduated with high honors, has been invited into one of Boston’s best law firms, and is best friends with the girl who her boyfriend left her for.
legalizing gay marriage is important yes. but please stop picking and choosing the pretty parts of my oppression you want to support. because the systematic oppression of queer folk is not limited to “oh they just can’t get married.” queer people are getting thrown out of their homes. dying. committing suicide. getting denied jobs. you can’t just slap a rainbow on a shirt and say you’re an ally
